  • Tailgate Season

As football season gets under way we wanted to send a reminder that all TXA alumni are invited to attend our pregame tailgates. All of these tailgates, with the exception of the Oklahoma State tailgate (more info will be posted on Linkedin,) will be held at the Sig Ep house. Tailgates typically begin about 3-4 hours prior to kickoff and go up until the start of the game. Barbecue, live music, and non-Keystone drinks will be provided at each one. We will try to have the parking lot as clear as possible so that y'all can stop by in a car, but the lot always fills up fast so it might be best to walk. Looking forward to meeting some of y'all at the tailgates!

  • Father-Son Golf Tournament

Every spring, Texas Alpha hosts a Parents Weekend Golf Tournament. Fathers and sons will rally around an afternoon of competition and camaraderie on the links while Moms enjoy their annual Mother’s Luncheon. This year we will be playing a foursome scramble at Falconhead Golf Course for the second year in a row. We are expecting a turnout of about 120 fathers and sons. Should be a great time!

  • Philanthropy

We are committed to serving others and giving back in any capacity we can. To outline a few: From last semester, our annual Dodgeball tournament raised $9,223 for Doug English's Lone Star Paralysis Foundation. Then we had a very succesful turnout for a blood drive that took place in our very own parking lot. And most recently, we sent nine Sigep volunteers to aide in the Hurricane Harvey Cleanup -- our very own Marcus DeAyala (VP New Member Development) lead this charge. The men spent two full weekends clearing out entire homes which included tearing out drywall, studs, and floors in preparation for the next step disaster victims face in recovering their homes.

Through the early months of the semester, Texas Alpha has continued to lead the pack as a premier fraternity at the University of Texas. We maintain our position as one of the strongest fraternities nationwide in manpower, academics, and campus involvement. e fall semester saw the completion of the Sigma Challenge and new member semester for 49 exceptional young men, and Texas Alpha’s continued impact on and off campus.

Our chapter continues to strive toward academic excellence with one of the strongest GPAs on campus. Last fall, the chapter obtained a GPA of 3.3, ranking in the top four among chapters of comparable size at Texas, and higher than the all-campus GPA. We are actively seeking accreditation as a Residential Learning Community by continuing the Balanced Man Lectureship Series. This semester, the series kicked off with A.J. Bingham, founder and CEO of Austin- based lobbying firm, The Bingham Group LLC. Texas faculty, such as Dr. Douglas Garrard, associate vice president for campus life and senior associate dean of students, who won the 2018 University Partner of the Year at Carlson this February, also continue to help to polish our actives into well-rounded men.

Even as young as 2018 is, we have already raised over $16,000 for the Boys and Girls Clubs and the Grace Loncar Foundation through a profit share with Outdoor Voices and our annual dodgeball tournament. Our men are involved in a wide variety of organizations on campus from business and engineering honor fraternities to intramural sports teams, with one of our soccer teams winning the championship last fall. We currently have nine Silver Spurs and seven Texas Cowboys, including three executives and one of four Bevo handlers in Spurs, and one executive member of Cowboys. Other involvement on campus includes five members on various IFC committees, two actives on the university club lacrosse team, the vice president of the Texas Energy Management Association, and both the president and vice president of the Real Estate Society.

Coming up, we have our annual country concert featuring Charlie Robison, Spring Parent’s Weekend (where we will have our inaugural Parent’s Weekend auction, benefitting ovarian cancer research), and the trademark safari party to wrap up the spring. We are all thrilled to be back for another great semester, and look forward to growing as one of the most elite fraternities nationwide. We are so grateful for the constant support and generosity, and wish you all a great spring.

HFF,

Will Jenkins ’19
