This spring will mark 10 years since I walked across the stage at graduation and left chapter life as a member of Texas Alpha. Those four years were a time of fun, excitement, challenges and growth founded on timeless values and cardinal principles that helped shape who I am today. I often refer to what I learned as a chapter member and officer as my "education in people." That education was fostered by great alumni and volunteers that, although they were busy with life, took the time to mentor a punk sophomore that just got elected to the Executive Council and thought he knew everything.

Well, I wasn't quite that smart, but they knew that. Men like Mark Kiester, Bruce Anderson and Jeff Loomis had a profound impact on my life at that time and helped me look at life with a long view and understand true priorities and goals; not just for the chapter, but for my life. Through these last 10 years, I have continued to learn new things about myself and others, met my loving wife and started a career. My story is not unique. We are all beneficiaries of those mentors that have helped us along the way, taught us lessons and invested in our lives. These people reiterate the values that make us who we are. As a group, TXA alumni and volunteers understand this simple truth and invest in each other and in the lives of our undergraduate members. Many of us spend time mentoring the chapter members in an array of fields from chapter operations, leadership skills, personal management and life after college. Almost all of us spend time with other alumni continuing the relationships that began many years ago around the dinner table, the tailgate and the chapter room. As alumni and volunteers we are committed for the betterment of ourselves and Sigma Phi Epsilon. We believe that our best lives are lived with through by balance and always on the foundation of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. Although mine is not a unique story within SigEp, we are unique as a group. Our founders set out to create a fraternity that would be different, and that's exactly what we are.
