Starting with Sigma Eta Chi member and one of the founders of the Texas Alpha Chapter, Chester Lee ’31, Texas Alpha members and alumni have had an active hand in shaping the direction of the National Chapter. Few other SigEp Chapters can boast of having had two Grand Chapter Presidents, first Don McCleary ’71 was President from 1987-1989 and then Gary Griffith ’70 served as President in 1995-1997. Don was responsible for forming the Committee on Self Esteem which served as the cornerstone for today's acclaimed Balanced Man Program.

Several alumni have served on the Grand Chapter's governing boards: the Sigma Phi Epsilon Education Foundation, Housing Corporation and Grand Chapter's Boards of Directors. Currently Alphonce Brown, Renaissance Brother ’70, is the president of the Education Foundation. Further several alumni have served as District Governors for District 13. Most recently Bill McCausland ’83 held that volunteer position until he moved to Florida in 2012; however his vacant spot was quickly filled with the selection of Bruce Anderson ’71 as the current District Governor.

TXA Brothers who have served on one or more of the Grand Chapter's governing bodies include: Gary Griffith ’70, Walter Hailey ’49, Tom Hicks ’68, Frank Martino ’49, Don McCleary ’71, Terry Nathan ’69, Mack Rankin ’50, Douglas Reed ’82, Bruce Schnitzer ’66, Dan Stuart ’50, Larry Taylor ’73, and John Tyler ’63.

Most notably Tom Hicks '68 endowed the Thomas O. Hicks scholarship to provide financial support to undergraduate members from across the nation who achieves significant improvements in their GPA's from their freshman to sophomore years. Most years 10 undergraduate members win the $1000 scholarships.

A great number of TXA brothers continue to do volunteer work for the Grand Chapter. For the past several years up to 3 brothers have served as facilitators for undergraduates and alumni alike at the annual Region 9 Carlson Leadership Academies.

Texas Alpha has a long tradition of developing Regional Directors who are employed by the Grand Chapter to assist in the development and governing of undergraduate Chapters across the nation. Former TXA regional directors include: Don McCleary ’71, Bill McCausland ’83, Bob Heintzelman ’88, Greg Barra ’83, and most recently Justin Kleiderer ’09. Gary Griffith ’70 was employed as Director of Chapter Services for several years in the late 70's. (??? Check this)

In recognition of their professional and civic achievements 16 TXA brother shave received the SigEp Citation. One of only a handful of Chapters across the country to have double digit recipients. The TXA Citation recipients are: Steve Hicks ’72, Tom Hicks ’68, Everett Hutchinson ’37, Elton Hyder ’43, Fred Korth ’32, Frank Martino ’52, Mack Rankin ’50, Walter Edward Rogers ’35, Dan Stuart ’49, David Chalk ’72, Roger Chapman ’49, X.R. Gill 1915, Bill Gossett ’42, Mark McClellan ’84, Scott McClellan ’90 (the only pair of twins to receive the award at the same Conclave) and most recently James Huffines ’73.

The highest honor bestowed on SigEp Alumni by the Grand Chapter is induction into the Order of the Golden Heart in recognition of a life time of contributions to our fraternity. Six TXA Brothers as received this prestigious award: Chester Lee ’31, X.R Gill 1915, Frank Martino ’49 (also a member of Texas Beta before transferring to UT), Don McCleary ’71, Gary Griffith ’70, and John Tyler ’63.

The TXA active Chapter is the recipient of 9 Buchanan Cups the highest honor given to undergraduate chapters each two years at our national Conclave. This award is determined by a nation wide competition and recognizes the top chapters across the nation for excellent in all areas of Chapter management from academics, manpower, fiscal operation, alumni relations and campus presence and prestigious.

Serving in leadership roles at the Grand Chapter is a long and significant tradition of Texas Alpha. While at times the relationship between the TXA and the Grand Chapter has been rocky, the TXA role plays in shaping our national fraternity is as important to the Chapter as it is to our national organization. This is a critical point our AVC makes to our undergraduate Chapter with the election of new officers. Our expectation for our members in that attend in large numbers the leadership programs provided by the Grand Chapter from the EDGE program for new members, to the annual Carlson Leadership Academies to the Ruck Leadership program and on occasion the Quest to Greece last attended by David Whitley ’05. When we join Sigma Phi Epsilon TXA brothers take their commitment to our fraternity as a long time obligation which is why so many TXA brothers have served our fraternity at the national level and the expectation is as time moves forward the undergraduate members of today will extend and enhance our tradition for generations far into the future.
